 GREEN GLOSSARY

Biodiesel

A diesel-equivalent processed fuel made from biological sources that can be used in unmodified diesel-engine vehicles. It’s a renewable fuel that can be manufactured from algae, vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled restaurant greases.

Biopesticides
Certain types of pesticides derived from such natural materials as animals, plants, bacteria and certain minerals. Biopesticides fall into three major classes including Microbial Pesticides, Plant-Incorporated-Protectants (PIPs) and Biochemical Pesticides.

Carbon Footprint
The calculation of an individual’s, factory’s, or other entity’s impact on the environment, measured as the total amount of carbon dioxide. See Greenhouse gases.

Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER)
A rating system for air conditioners that indicates how much heat is removed per hour for each watt of energy used. Heat is measured in British thermal units (Btu) and the rating is expressed in Btu per hour per watt.

Greenhouse gases (GHGs)
Airborne chemicals responsible for trapping heat in the earth's atmosphere. They include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone from natural and human sources. Other manmade GHGs include include hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). An increase in greenhouse gases is responsible for the so-called greenhouse effect, a critical factor in global warming.

Recycled tile and stone
Used in flooring, these products create an easy-to-clean surface that won't promote allergens. When working with stone, try to find materials native to your area and avoid stone from large-scale quarries, which can damage the environment. There are also quite a variety of tiles made with post-consumer waste materials, including recycled industrial glass or even recycled rubber

Reclaimed wood
Flooring and other wood products remilled from salvaged timbers previously used as railroad ties, flooring or other building purposes. Its use prevents this lumber from becoming waste, while also preserving living trees.
